Muzalema Mwanza is the Founder and CEO of Safe Motherhood Alliance, a social enterprise that develops and distributes innovative maternal healthcare products for pregnant women living in low-income communities and rural areas. Safe Motherhood Alliance develops low-cost appropriate technology tools designed to meet the unique needs of women in resource-poor settings and trains women from underserved communities to function as frontline health workers and distribute essential kit supplies and other healthcare products. Their mission is to reduce maternal and infant mortality through improved quality of care at the time of birth by preventing deadly and debilitating infections for over 20 million pregnant women across Southern Africa with no access to healthcare by giving them increased access to a clean, safe delivery and a healthy start to a new life.
Muzalema’s work demonstrates her passion for empowering women and has led her to be selected as an Ashoka Fellow, Obama Africa Leader, and an Echoing Green Fellow among other honours.
